Who Can Borrow Materials

These borrowers may check out materials in person at the Kalamazoo College Library:

     Current Kalamazoo College faculty, staff, and students, and emeriti faculty, with a valid Kalamazoo College ID;
     Kalamazoo College alumni and trustees with a valid driver’s license;
     Patrons of MeLCat participating libraries that use the MeLCat Visiting Patron Service with a valid library card from their MeLCat participating library.

All borrowers must have a working email address.

All walk-in patrons are welcome to consult the Library’s print materials. If you are not affiliated with one of the groups above, please borrow Kalamazoo College Library materials through MeLCat or Interlibrary Loan services from your home library.

If you have questions about whether you qualify as a borrower at the Kalamazoo College Library, please call Circulation at 269-337-7153 or email circulation@kzoo.edu.

Overdue and Lost Items

You are responsible for knowing when your materials are due and for returning them on time. The library attempts to notify borrowers of overdue materials. Failure to receive notification does not absolve borrowers of fines and fees.

Kalamazoo College Library Materials

Current Kalamazoo College students, trustees, and alumni borrowers accrue fines and may be charged replacement fees. Current Kalamazoo College faculty and staff do not accrue fines, but they may be charged replacement fees.

Fines are assessed at the following rates:

     Books and periodicals: 25¢ per day
     Reserve materials, CDs, DVDs, videos: $1.00 per hour

Fines accumulate until the item is returned, renewed, or declared lost.

Borrowing privileges are suspended if a borrower owes more than $20.00 in fines, replacement costs, or billing fees. Borrowers must pay library fines or fees in excess of $20.00 in order to reinstate borrowing privileges. Fines and fees may be paid at the Library Circulation Desk. Cash or checks are accepted.

Students’ library fines are transferred to the Kalamazoo College Business Office each month. After a fine is transferred, it will appear on a student’s Kalamazoo College student account and bill. After a fine is transferred, students may pay the fine at the Business Office or with a check electronically via the Kalamazoo College Portal. Fines cannot be paid at the Library once they are transferred to the Business Office.

When an item is more than 45 days overdue, the library will declare it as lost and bill as follows:

     Replacement cost: $45.00 or higher, depending on the replacement cost of the item, and
     Fines and billing fees: $15.00

The Library may bill a faculty or staff member’s department for materials that require replacement.

You can see your fines for checked out items through your Library Account.

MeLCat materials
Because MelCat items are not owned by our library and require prompt return, materials not returned after 14 days are subject to a $10 charge for accumulated fines and cost of billing.  When an item is 21 days overdue, the library will declare it lost and bill as follows:

     Replacement cost: $45.00 or higher, depending on the replacement cost of the item, and
     Fines and billing fees: $15.00

The Library may charge a faculty or staff member’s department for the amount billed by the lending library.

Interlibrary Loan materials
Overdue fines of $1.00 per day are applied to all interlibrary loan items. The Library may charge a faculty or staff member’s department for the amount billed by the lending library.
