Circulation and Borrowing

Service Changes

During the COVID-19 Pandemic, the library building is closed. We are not lending physical materials or retrieving items from storage. Due dates have been extended, and if you have library books to return, please keep them until the building reopens. If you have circulation and borrowing questions, please email us at circulation@kzoo.edu.

The Circulation Desk is located to the left of the library’s main entrance. For assistance, contact the Circulation Department at circulation@kzoo.edu or 269-337-7153.

Who Can Borrow Materials

These borrowers may check out Kalamazoo College materials in person at the Kalamazoo College Library:

  • Current Kalamazoo College faculty, staff, and students, and emeriti faculty, with a valid Kalamazoo College ID;
  • Kalamazoo College alumni and trustees with a valid driver’s license;
  • Patrons of MeLCat participating libraries that use the MeLCat Visiting Patron Service with a valid library card from their MeLCat participating library.

All borrowers must have a working email address.

Walk-in patrons are welcome to consult the Library’s print materials in person.

Walk-in patrons, alumni, and trustees may borrow Kalamazoo College Library materials through MeLCat or Interlibrary Loan from their home libraries, but may not use Kalamazoo College Library to borrow MeLCat or Interlibrary Loan materials from other libraries.

If you have questions about whether you qualify as a borrower at the Kalamazoo College Library, please call Circulation at 269-337-7153 or email circulation@kzoo.edu.

Overdue and Lost Items

You are responsible for knowing when your materials are due and for returning them on time. The Library attempts to notify borrowers of overdue materials. Failure to receive notification does not absolve borrowers of fines and fees.

Kalamazoo College Library Materials

The Kalamazoo College Library does not charge fines for materials owned by our library that circulate on a daily basis. However, some items still accrue fines:

  • materials that circulate hourly (reserve materials, CDs, DVDs, power banks, and videos) accumulate fines at $1.00 per hour
  • recalled items that circulate on a daily basis accrue fines at 25 cents per day after the new due date (three days after the recall date).

Media Services, the Center for New Media Design, and other departments may still charge overdue fines for their materials, as determined by individual departments.

Kalamazoo College students, staff, faculty, trustees, and alumni may accrue replacement charges on items more than 45 days overdue. When an item is lost, damaged, or more than 45 days overdue, library users will be billed a $45 replacement cost per item, plus a $15 processing fee.

Fines and fees may be paid at the Library Circulation Desk. Cash or checks are accepted.

Students’ library fines are transferred to the Kalamazoo College Business Office each month. After a fine is transferred, it will appear on a student’s Kalamazoo College student account and bill. After a fine is transferred, students may pay the fine at the Business Office or with a check electronically via the Kalamazoo College Portal. Fines cannot be paid at the Library once they are transferred to the Business Office.

The Library may bill a faculty or staff member’s department for materials that require replacement.

You can see your fines for checked out items through your Library Account.

MeLCat materials
Because MelCat items are not owned by our library and require prompt return, materials more than 21 days overdue may result in accounts being charged up to $100.01 per item in replacement charges. This charge may be turned over the Business Office for student account billing or may be invoiced to a faculty or staff member’s department.

Interlibrary Loan materials
Overdue fines of $1.00 per day are applied to all interlibrary loan items. The Library may charge a faculty or staff member’s department for the amount billed by the lending library.
